Self Assessment and Plan for Improvement

Of my best qualities, the ones which will most benefit me as a teacher are:  my ability to think and express myself clearly and creatively, my acknowledgement and appreciation of the unique qualities of individuals, and a strong vision of what I can do to help make our world the best place possible.

For eight years I’ve been seeing the world through my son’s eyes, then interpreting for him what I know, in words he could understand.  He now sees with confidence that what cannot yet be explained is just waiting to be explored by him.  I’ve found the ability to explain things well and encourage in him the desire to know more.

As a person who’s spent many years learning about what makes me the individual that I am, I have developed the ability to appreciate differences in others.  I find it’s easy to see value in each child, unique talents and aptitudes inherent in every one.  I don’t feel we all need to excel in the same areas.  There’s a special place in the world for each of us.

Finally, while I know perfection is unlikely, I see that it is our quest as humans to always try for our perceived ideals.  I know myself well.  I have a clear vision of what I feel is possible and worthwhile in life and I wish all that and more for the students I will one day teach.

I know that the challenge facing me, personally, is to develop a referent relationship with a class, while keeping my position as an authority.  I’m tempted at times to be casual and friendly with kids.  I realize that this erodes authority and am thinking of ways to avoid mistakes.

Teaching is a great career for me.  I feel I have a lot to offer the profession.  I’m excited about my future as a teacher.
